| Remember, remember the 5th of November... Trump wins US election 2024 |
|
| Donald Trump has addressed his followers in a victory speech after beating Kamala Harris in the 2024 US election, with millions watching on around the world. It has certainly felt like an age since the US presidential election campaign first began. The wait beforehand was to see whether history would be made in the form of current vice president Kamala Harris becoming the first female president of the United States, or in the form of Trump being the first convicted felon to enter the White House. There's been plenty of viral reactions and memes shared online since the result was declared, as well as angry posts from the likes of Cardi B as Democrat-supporting celebrities have their say. Elsewhere, Trump's estranged niece has posted a message which seems to sum up the thoughts of millions on the election. That mood has since been reiterated with Susie Dent's word of the day, which is 'recrudescence' (17th century) which means the return of something terrible after a time of reprieve. Trump declared victory hours before it became official with a speech which featured a cameo from Dana White in which he shouted out controversial streamer Adin Ross. | Welcome to the Indy100 newsletter | |

| Scientists have observed the biggest feeding frenzy ever recorded after a swarm of cod ate 10 million fish in a matter of hours. Our vast oceans are places where scientists continue to make surprising discoveries, but while one man was horrified to witness fish eating a salmon fillet he dropped into the sea, sea animals eating one another is a very natural phenomenon. A study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) alongside Norwegian oceanographers found that a wild feeding frenzy off the coast of Norway is one of the biggest on record. In the Norwegian Sea, the team observed a swarm of Atlantic cod prey upon over 10 million capelin fish within just a few hours. Read more here | |
| Experts have discovered a 450-million-year-old 3D fossil of a spider relative preserved in fool's gold. Fossils offer a fascinating glimpse into the past, helping scientists understand what species existed in ancient times. A fossilised giant trapdoor spider was recently found in New South Wales, while in Los Angeles a megalodon shark fossil was found underneath a high school. Now, in what has been described as a "spectacularly preserved" discovery, a new species of spider has been identified from a fossil found inside iron pyrite, known as fool's gold. A research team led by the University of Oxford found the new species, which is a distant relative of arachnids we know today like scorpions and horseshoe crabs. It belongs to a group of arthropods called megacheirans which possess a large appendage on the front of their heads to capture prey with. The new species has been named lomankus edgecombei to honour Greg Edgecombe, an arthropod expert from the Natural History Museum in London. | |

| Micro-cheating is a complex form of flirting – the intention is what sets the two apart. The behaviours are subjective to every individual relationship. While one couple may consider flirting with the bartender as micro-cheating, others may view it as harmless. Berman Psychotherapy clinician Hannah Paull, PSYD, told Indy100 it's essentially "almost cheating," meaning you did not "fully sexually or emotionally engage with another person outside of the relationship, but you certainly walked the line, hoping you wouldn't get caught."
