With Halloween in the rearview mirror, it seems we've jumped headfirst into the holiday season. Folks across town are trading pumpkins for Christmas trees — but if you're not sure what to do with your leftover jack-o'-lanterns, I have a (somewhat offbeat) suggestion. Widnor Farms in Custer is hosting its annual "Great Pumpkin Rescue" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday. Families from across the county are invited to feed their pumpkins to the

pigs, explore the farm and enjoy cookies and hot cocoa.

On the subject of holiday events, Mercato delle Bontà — purveyor of food writer Mark Saleeb's favorite focaccia — is kicking off the season with a series of holiday markets. These pop-up events run every Saturday through Dec. 21 in the Granary Building.

While not explicitly holiday-related, Nordic Fest is happening Saturday at the Ferndale Events Center, and the coffee and Scandinavian treats definitely give off cozy winter vibes. Open Book: A Festival for Readers takes place in Ferndale the following day, with esteemed local authors like Robert Lashley in attendance.

Finally, the November installment of First Friday in Bellingham is this evening. Businesses across the downtown corridor are hosting special events; personally, I'm most interested in the service industry group art show at Make.Shift, Ken Osthimer's platinum prints at Quicksilver Photo Lab and $6 glasses of wine at Hotel Leo. Check online for a full list of participating businesses and a handy map.
