When I pitched a story on the Bellingham Community Meal program to my editors several weeks ago, I thought it would be a simple process. Attend the meal, speak to folks involved and write a feel-good story for the holiday season.
But it became far more complicated than that. I happened to reach out to people involved in the program right ahead of a pivotal meeting in November to discuss whether the meal program should continue next year, after more than 40 years.
That question hasn't been answered yet. For those who attend the meal and those who have been involved for decades, losing the meal entirely would be difficult to swallow. But with issues around volunteerism and liability, all involved are now evaluating how much work needs to be done to fix those issues, and whether it's worth it to continue. You can read that story here.
The Sudden Valley community is still reckoning with the damage caused by November's intense windstorm. Some homes, including that of the Noices in Gate 3, pictured here, were completely destroyed by fallen trees.
