For most of their lives, my grandparents were heavily involved in ice skating. They actually met at an ice rink when my grandma asked if she could buy my grandpa a beer. Both were involved in U.S. Figure Skating, the national figure skating body — my grandma was a judge and my grandpa ran music. While the ice skating gene skipped me, I still have memories of being at the ice rink as a kid, hanging out during skating competitions, my grandma judging from the stands.
Today, my colleague Nick Zeller-Singh has a profile about 20-year-old Liam Kapeikis, who is working toward his dream of becoming a top figure skater in the country. He'll be competing in Wichita, Kansas, in a few weeks at the U.S. Championships. If he places in the top six, Kapeikis will be able to qualify for the 2026 Olympics in Milan, Italy. You can read more about his journey here.

The City of Bellingham is asking the state Legislature to approve a $3 million grant to support the cleanup of the RG Haley site. In all, the project will cost $28.6 million to clean up the site, along with the Cornwall Avenue Landfill site, and eventually become a 20-acre waterfront park. (Hailey Hoffman/Cascadia Daily News)
