Washington is once again on the brink of reaching a compromise on border security. Will it hold?
Senators voted 84-9 on Thursday to advance the Laken Riley Act to the floor for debate next week. Democrats joined with Republicans on the vote, taken in by a promise from Majority Leader John Thune of an amendment process.
The legislation would streamline the process of beginning deportation proceedings for immigrants charged with some minor crimes including theft.
Supporters say it will prevent tragedies like the murder of Laken Riley, whose convicted killer is an undocumented Venezuelan migrant.
Opponents say it will run roughshod over due process rights for undocumented Americans, and lead to those rights being eroded for full citizens.
Thursday's vote sets up an amendment process next week. Democrats have already signaled their intention to offer riders, including one that would provide a pathway to citizenship for migrant agricultural workers.
But the party's resistance is splintering; several members have already indicated their intention to vote for the legislation even if their party is unable to amend it.
And so, President Joe Biden's party could be poised to hand Donald Trump a victory before the president-elect even reaches the White House.
