Hello (or hallo, as they say in the Netherlands) from Groningen, my temporary home during Eurosonic festival/conference. If you are a music industry person who also happens to be in Groningen, I'll be chatting on a panel today at 12pm about the future of the music press (duh duh duhhhhhh), so come say hi! There've also some really great acts performing (and I've only heard of maybe 5 per cent of them), including Brogeal, Muireann Bradley, Delara, Jacob Alon, Luvcat, Yamê, Sirens of Lesbos, Woomb and Big Special. My award for best band name, though, goes to French punk/garage group We Hate You Please Die. We've got plenty of features and reviews going live over the weekend, including Helen Brown's review of the posthumous Mac Miller album, Balloonerism. Keep an eye out of Jim Farber's interview with Henry Alford, author of the new book I Dream With Joni, on Sunday. Have a good one! |

| I did feel anxious about pissing people off or any sort of backlash, but I have to write about what my experiences are – I'm not going to sugarcoat it. It is, you know, my reality. |

| Q. Hello! Tell me about yourself |
| A. Hello! I'm a singer-songwriter from London. I live in an ex-mental health clinic in Walthamstow, I work in a café in Hackney and I cycle everywhere. I'm currently reading a handful of books including some Annie Ernaux, David Whyte and Mahmoud Darwish. I'm half Irish, half Iranian and have never felt at home anywhere other than East London, where I've lived for 10 years. I volunteer for Hackney Foodbank and Palestine Solidarity Campaign. I eat kgs and kgs of peanut butter and I couldn't survive without plain digestive biscuits or salt and vinegar crisps. Over the last year I've nursed mild obsessions with the space race, witchcraft, WW2, the cold war, the history of the modern Middle East and Raymond Carver's short stories. I love foxes. There's something about them I feel a deep affinity with. I'm about to release my second album, "I still want to share", which has been in the making for the last 4 years. |

| Q. What are your inspirations and influences? |
| A. I love music that cuts the bullshit. I also love voices in which you can hear age, experience and which crack here and there or wobble around. I struggle to name specific influences because I tend to flit between my obsessions and I'm never sure which have really stuck. As time goes on, I find myself appreciating blues more and more in its simplicity, grittiness, directness, and lack of self-pity. I think I love music that touches depths without taking itself too seriously. This year I've spent a lot of time listening to Karen Dalton, Josephine Foster… but I've also long-time loved Angel Olsen and Hannah Cohen for the reasons above… and lately I'm really inspired by Anna B Savage, Rachael Lavelle and Hayley Heyderickx who have all just released some incredible records. |
| Q. What do you have lined up for 2025? |
| A. Once my album is out I'm playing some in-store and headline shows around the UK, and a couple of festivals like Celtic Connections and Eurosonic. Then I'll be trying to find some semblance of routine or consistency while I finish writing LP3. I want to see some mountains around the UK and I want to learn to drive… we will see if I achieve those things. I hope to be on and off the road around the UK and Europe for most of the year with my new band, and recording the next album sometime around autumn. I don't know where or who with yet… |
