Liz Truss's long-lasting legacy |
Mel Stride, the shadow chancellor, was granted an urgent question in the Commons this morning to ask about the effect on the public finances of the rise in long-term interest rates. He was given short shrift by Darren Jones, the chief secretary to the Treasury, who failed to detect what it was that Stride was saying the Conservatives would do differently. One Tory who did do things differently, and who imagines that she has been vindicated now that long-term interest rates are higher than they were when she was prime minister, is Liz Truss. Her determination to insist on Twitter (where she is often re-posted by Elon Musk) that she was right all along is part of the long hangover from the Tory government that Kemi Badenoch and Stride will take a long time to live down. Difficult as Rachel Reeves's job may be, the British people are a long, long way from thinking that the Tory party would do better. |

British politics was dominated by a 'shouty man on social media' |
Westminster has been obsessed for the last few days with the poisonous posts on X of its owner, Elon Musk. One senior public servant asked me why so much attention was being paid to a "shouty man on social media", who may be rich and a friend of the US president-elect, but whose views of Britain are of no account. Unfortunately, Musk's feud has been taken up opportunistically by Kemi Badenoch, who devoted her questions to the prime minister yesterday to the demand for a public inquiry into grooming gangs. This was difficult for Keir Starmer, because the demand sounds reasonable even if the conspiracy theories that so often lie behind it are not. He got through it, but had to leave himself enough room to concede a limited inquiry later. |
