I'm a fan of outdoor recreation, like most people who live in the Pacific Northwest.
So I've been tuned in to the mass firings of employees in the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service, worried about how they'll impact what I love about living in this part of the country the most: our beautiful, vast, protected outdoor spaces.
Lucky for me (and for you), my colleagues Sophia Gates and Julia Tellman have worked hard this week to demonstrate how all of this will impact us: from axed volunteer programs to deteriorating hiking trails. You can read those pieces here:
Visitors to Artist Point in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest can learn about hikes, wildlife and wilderness ethics from the Mountain Stewards, a volunteer program coordinated by Forest Service employees. The program likely will not happen this summer. (Photo courtesy of Steven Payne)
