While Vladimir Putin is in power and he and Donald Trump are happy to exclude Ukraine from negotiations on peace, a lasting peace is unattainable. You can't just carve an independent country up and leave it vulnerable to Putin's next takeover bid. Putin would regroup and take the next chunk – he is determined to make Ukraine a subordinate part of Russia again. His next view will be of the Baltic countries and anywhere else that has 'escaped' from the mighty Soviet empire. –Jill Adams
There will be no peace in Ukraine while Trump is president of the USA. He admires dictators and will 'give' peace to Ukraine allowing Russia to gain ground but this will not bring peace as Putin will over time push for more. –Irene Newton
I think we have to pray that peace is attainable, but also pray that Ukraine isn't sold down the river by Trump. Right now it feels as if we are about to sell out, which would be utterly unethical, and in the long term, politically perilous. –John Beardmore
Durable peace in Ukraine is possible only when it is made clear to Putin that the West does not accept the expansionism of Russia. Negotiation must be led by Ukraine and the West must not take any levers of negotiation off the negotiating table. The Ukrainian people have been incredibly brave and resourceful in the defence of their country. Past guarantees of their security were not fulfilled, which was not acceptable.
Anything less than full support for a free, independent and sovereign Ukraine will be a signal towards further Russian expansionism. Yes, we are in dangerous times, but appeasement at this time will make the future even more dangerous. US expansionism must also be opposed and rejected. –Kevin Charlton
Your question was, 'Is Peace in Ukraine Feasible?' It doesn't feel positive right now. The simplistic, banality of the loudest and richest men is drowning out the very hard, constant work humanity has to do to keep itself kind and compassionate. They scream about free speech, their ubiquitous noise making freedom of expression impossible for anyone; which is their point. Ukraine is, they insist, to be resolved by extreme volumes of biased nonsense.
So many of us are unable or unwilling to speak out against the racket that many will persuade themselves that just 'getting on with life' is the best thing to do. The yelling and bullying will, they assume, blow over eventually. This allows banality to become important. Yes, some will survive, but it will take so long to be able to listen properly again because of fear of being shouted down. So we all hear stuff but don't make sense of it because listening is a lost skill. It will take ages to demystify the banal imperative, to ridicule it and see beyond it.
It feels like there is a need for constant, consistent, insistent quiet voices. Dictators fear creativity, curiosity, wisdom, kindness and the freedom to learn all the time. They legislate against such things. They hate the wildness of the arts and human questioning. Their metrics are about the bottom level of Maslow's triangle – success is a denial of all human potential and possibility and those who oppose them are scrutinised and punished for any perceived wrongdoing. Hence the need to keep up the irritation of questions – though the punitive response may be truly horrid.
Ukraine, I fear, will be reduced and exhausted. Is that peace? No more so than deporting an entire people from their homeland to expunge a problem. Peace is more than a cessation of killing, torture and destruction. It is profoundly human and part of what tiny bit of us raises us above animals. But we are animals.
So we return to the animals we are because that feels 'real'. The troupe with an alpha male and its scapegoats to keep him safe. But we are human and complex so the sense is not so much peace as some evolution from elements of the apparent chaos producing methods of survival and purposeful development that overcome the shock and awe by ignoring them by refusing to be either shocked or awed. –Mary Hughes
No country will ever have peace in Europe so long as people like Putin are allowed to keep breaking sanctions. Russia is still selling its oil, at lower prices to get past the sanctions but it's still enough to keep waging war with Ukraine or threatening other countries. I hear there are many ships called the "dark fleet" that are shipping his oil around the globe. These are manned by people who need the money and can't say anything or they'll lose their job.
Trump is doing Putin's bidding even if he thinks Russia is doing his. His idea of making a deal is to give everything away to anyone just so long as it enriches his family. Trump is running circles around his own party, which cannot stop him for fear of losing their jobs! Democracies all over the world have to take seriously Putin's need to dominate. If he can buy the President of the United States then what chance do smaller democracies have? We must defend Ukraine as if our lives depend on it because eventually, it will. –Vee Lavallee
