What are we talking about here in terms of the sheer volume of GPGPUs, vs ASICs like Trainium available at Amazon or other CPSs? Is the ratio 10-1? The issue here is seems to be more about different workloads and what each requires in terms of compute and cost, cloud customers already switch between different hardware platforms and services depending what the workload is...the platform chosen is also about inhouse capability to use say CUDA or Neuron and other tools and libraries so not all about cost, but it would seem to all come down to specific workloads and matching the hardware to the workload at a particular price point.... That said — this move and change to the market is positively existential. And Salesforce is the proverbial canary in the coal mine— if they can't make this transition, it doesn't bode well for many other stalwarts at the app layer.
SaaS isn't going away — but it is clearly moving to be something else than it was, fueled by AI agents and with a much higher dose of non-subscription, usage based pricing models.
If Salesforce cannot make the transition, others will fill the gap.
