Sir Keir Starmer told ITV's Robert Peston this afternoon that a deal to scrap Donald Trump's tariffs on British goods would not go far enough.
"Just as we've done with defence and security, where we've recognised it's a changing world, we've got to step up and act differently," the prime minister said.
He added that we are "entering a new era" and "have to think and behave in a way that reflects that".
Nothing about the PM's response this week feels particularly different to what he would have announced before Mr Trump kicked his trade war off.
Labour figures are desperate for Sir Keir to seize the opportunity for a major reset and use it to pursue bold, transformative policies. At the moment, the PM risks letting it pass him by.
