The government is in talks with France about a deal that would see Britain able to return migrants who have crossed the Channel in small boats.
The agreement would see those in France with a claim for family reunion in the UK taken in, with France describing a "one-for-one" principle.
It comes as the Home Office confirmed a record number for 2025 made the crossing on Tuesday, with 705 migrants arriving in 12 dinghies.
Sir Keir Starmer has talked endlessly about "smashing the gangs" organising crossings, promising to treat smugglers like terrorists and pursue them across the world.
The potential deal with France sounds much simpler, and would prove far more effective. If those arriving in Britain know they will be sent straight back to France, while eligible asylum seekers are offered safe routes, smuggling gangs will finally have something to worry about.
