Since then, Lynden has taken a leadership role among conservative school boards in the state, advocating for a change in Washington Interscholastic Activities Association policy.
Things have only gotten more complicated since President Donald Trump took office in January. While the administration has taken firm stances on the issue of transgender athletes in sports, Washington state has been clear about the issue: restricting transgender student athlete participation is against state law, no matter what the federal government says.
Earlier this week, the federal government announced it would investigate Washington's education agency over the same policy Lynden's school board dislikes. (An agency employee told me today that no lawsuit has been filed, yet.)
I'll be filing a story this evening on the outcome of this vote. In the meantime, I'll be reading about a similar situation in Maine, which may foreshadow what's to come for Washington.
