His photojournalistic talents developed during World War II when he joined the Army and spent two years in the Signal Corps in Europe. After the war, Paulin enrolled at the Institute of Design in Chicago and studied with Harry Callahan and Laszlo Maholy-Nagy. In 1957, he become the first artist to hold a solo exhibit at Helen Gee's Limelight Gallery, the only gallery for art photography in New York City at the time. Paulin’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions including the Milwaukee Art Museum, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven.
