King Charles III delivered a speech in Ottawa on Tuesday that seemed intended for a Washington-based audience of one.
Charles declared that Canada, under Carney's government, would bond with "reliable trading partners and allies" — a clear warning shot for Washington.
He'd add that Canada's government was determined to protect the right to "self-determination" for the country.
"We must be clear-eyed: the world is a more dangerous and uncertain place than at any point since the Second World War," said Charles on Tuesday. "Canada is facing challenges that are unprecedented in our lifetimes."
It was the first time a reigning monarch of the United Kingdom had been invited to address the opening of Canadian parliament in 50 years.
The king's visit was an unmistakable response to Donald Trump's overtures — and threats — aimed at coercing Canada to join the United States.
It came just as the US president gave it his latest go: an offer to cover Canada with his planned "Golden Dome" missile defence system for a price tag of $61bn, which only applied if Canada remains a sovereign country.
On Friday, five members of the US Senate were in Ottawa on a bipartisan visit aimed at restoring ties.
The delegation featured just one Republican member, who turned to near-groveling as he appealed to Canada's government: please take us seriously.
