Detained farmworker activist joins federal lawsuit against ICE, immigration court

It's been a decade since SEIU union members at PeaceHealth went on strike. While many of their concerns remain the same, this time, advanced care providers and hospitalists are joining them on the picket line.

Visual journalist Santiago Ochoa and I were outside St. Joseph's Medical Center early yesterday morning to witness the momentum building as more and more supporters and union members picked up signs, including physicians.

It is incredibly rare to see doctors and nurse practitioners on strike. I'm told this is because of their professional relationship with patients. Yet, there they were.

One sentence from the striking clinicians has stuck with me: "Unionization is not a radical departure from the medical profession's values — it is a return to them."

The statement continued: "In a system increasingly dominated by corporate interests, unionization offers a way for healthcare workers and clinicians to reclaim their voice, protect their patients, and shape the future of healthcare in our community, and ultimately in our country."

It is worth noting that hundreds of qualified, talented medical professionals and caregivers are still working inside the hospital to ensure the community's well-being during this particularly difficult moment.
