The U.S. Supreme Court handed President Trump a major victory today by curbing the power of federal judges to impose nationwide rulings impeding his policies but it left unresolved the issue of whether he can limit birthright citizenship.

The court's 6-3 ruling, authored by conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett, did not let Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship go into effect immediately, directing lower courts that blocked it to reconsider the scope of their orders. The ruling also did not address its legality.

The high court issued several other rulings as it wrapped up its current term. 

The court preserved a key element of the Obamacare law that helps guarantee that health insurers cover preventive care such as cancer screenings and HIV prevention medication at no cost to patients. It also ruled in favor of Christian and Muslim parents in Maryland who sued to keep their elementary school children out of certain classes when storybooks with LGBT characters are read in a high-profile case involving the intersection of religion and LGBT rights.
