In case you missed it, there was a cow on the loose last summer. Mabel, the brown cow, escaped from her livestock trailer while being transported to an auction in early August.

She made a home in the Barkley neighborhood and became a frequent guest star on social media — remember the 'did you see this cow?' posts?

It took two months for her to be captured by the Whatcom Humane Society and now, a year after her escape, she's found her forever barn in Friday Harbor.

I'm pretty sure I coined the term "the 2024 Great Bellingham Cow Hunt" in the first story I wrote about Mabel. But all jokes aside, I'm glad the year-old cow has finally found her people and fellow cows at the Earth Animal Retirement Sanctuary. She's got two new friends and plenty of hay. The sanctuary is planning to host visitors but will post on social media when Mabel is ready.
