As The Independent's travel team, we get to visit destinations far and wide – from off-grid escapes on Sweden's islands to traversing the desertscapes of Jordan – and one country we all share a love of is Spain. There are plenty reasons we appreciate this Iberian hotspot, but none so obvious as the country's beaches. Last week, I (Amelia Neath, travel writer) visited Port de Pollença in north Mallorca with my family. Along the town's seafront Pine Walk, we found little coves ideal for quiet dips, while further along the shoreline, the main beach offered watersports and boat trips. On senior travel writer Natalie Wilson's recent trip to Spain, she stopped by one of the country's many costas. "Beyond Benidorm, Costa Blanca's charming coastal town Moraira is my star of the summer for its turquoise waters, delicious paella and peaceful atmosphere, away from bright lights and tower blocks," she said. Meanwhile, global travel editor Annabel Grossman recommends the "heavenly" town of Sa Tuna: "A little cove surrounded by pretty fishermen cottages," on Spain's Costa Brava. |

| Sophie Dickinson, deputy travel editor, prefers a Balearic break over a mainland stay, and on a recent trip to Ibiza she "swapped vodka shots and late nights for turmeric juices and sunrise yoga". One of Sophie's favourite coastal spots in Ibiza is Cala Llonga, a laidback pine-fringed bay that feels a world away from the island's party scene. And as for assistant travel editor Emilee Tombs – she rates the northern coast of Spain for its lesser-known beaches and foodie credentials: "San Sebastian's sweeping town beach is backed by a warren of cobbled streets boasting some of the best pinxtos bars you're likely to try anywhere in Spain, and each one has a speciality dish." And let's not forget Barcelona, the Catalan capital boasts a gorgeous coastline, fabulous hotels and a rich cultural calendar. Plus, it's been reported that in 2026, Antoni Gaudí's most famous work – the Sagrada Família cathedral – will finally be completed, 100 years after the famous architect's death. Reason enough to book a trip next year, we think. | |
