I first found Birch Bay Beach Park in a list of state grant recipients. I was intrigued by the description, which promised parking, activity areas, lights and more.
Staff told me Whatcom County has owned the land since 2014, when it purchased the property with Conservation Futures funds. It's remained undeveloped as the county worked to secure funding. But the project to upgrade the park is moving forward, and staff expect the first phase to be completed in 2028.
The park isn't limited to the lot - it also includes more than 9 acres of tidelands. Doralee Booth, county liaison for the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce, told me saltwater shoreline is "the heart of our community."
"Being able to be in the park and being able to now go out and enjoy literally miles of walking on the tide flats and everything is just -- it's who we are," she said.
