In light of the abundant public art cropping up around Bellingham this summer, I recently rounded up nine of the newest murals.
The timing felt right considering this weekend is the Noisy Waters Mural Festival, a "friendly art competition" featuring world-class artists (and a plethora of other activities).
Muralists from across the country will be live painting at the waterfront all weekend long, and community members of all ages are invited to vote for their favorites.
The top three winners receive cash contracts to create new murals on prominent walls around town.
Art isn't the only attraction at Noisy Waters: There's also live music, yoga, a maker's market and an Upcycled Runway Show, the latter of which happens at 6 p.m. tomorrow. It's organized by Suzanne Lundberg of The Goat's Coat, who gave me the run-down of what to expect in a recent event preview.
On another A&E note, you're never too old to enjoy a Moo-Wich — and this weekend is your last chance to get one at the Northwest Washington Fair. Andy Bronson's recent photo gallery documents some of what to expect, from carnival rides to fried food and herds of obscenely cute farm animals.
Erika Lautenbach, the Whatcom County Health and Community Services director at the time, discusses the department's budget requests at the Wednesday, Oct. 30 Whatcom County Council meeting. Lautenbach was fired from her position at the helm of the department in March. (Hailey Hoffman/Cascadia Daily News)
Garcia Gallegos sits at display table in their Bellingham shop featuring hundreds of crystals and stones on July 28. (Santiago Ochoa/Cascadia Daily News)
