Donald Trump vowed on Thursday to hit the streets of the nation's capital and view his cleanup efforts firsthand.
Instead, the president's big visit to U.S. Park Police headquarters in southeast D.C. turned into little more than a photo op with free pizza for members of the National Guard — who've spent the past few days loitering aimlessly around the District.
Though the White House stirred up media attention with a promise of Trump walking D.C.'s streets — something Barack Obama and Joe Biden used to do for fun — the episode ended up being an example of how members of the president's team often make promises they can't back up.
CNN later reported that the Secret Service was caught off guard by the president's plans to stroll about the city. It was never announced where the president had planned to go "on patrol" with members of the Guard.
A few hundred members of the Guard who did show up for Trump's mini-speech and pizza party were treated to unrelated rants about the GOP budget reconciliation package and even the president's plans to renovate the White House.
" They've been after a ballroom for 150 years, but they never had a real estate guy as a president," Trump told members of the Guard.
As Inside Washington reported on Wednesday, the White House's efforts to spit-shine the public image of their D.C. takeover come as Trump's team has struggled over authority with the city's leaders in court, and D.C. residents have signaled their clear opposition to the occupation of their hometown.
