Ken Bell, a current commissioner who has held the position since 2018, said that securing new flights and routes at the airport is only part of the equation. New routes must make sense for the airlines in a time of pilot and aircraft shortages. The airport and surrounding area are an established free trade zone with access to air and trail freight. Bell is encouraging his fellow commissioners and port staff to explore what businesses could establish in the area.
Meanwhile, challenger Carly James said the airport is Whatcom County's biggest advertisement and should positively impact all residents. The issues at the airport, for James, are indicative of a larger problem with the entire port.
