| | Democrats reject GOP deal to avert shutdown | |
| Democrats on Tuesday voted down a resolution to continue funding the federal government just hours before a deadline for a partial shutdown was to occur. A handful broke ranks, but in the end the GOP fell short of the eight votes they needed to stop a filibuster and pass the resolution through the upper chamber. Democrats are demanding provisions to extend subsidies for health care plans on the Affordable Care Act exchanges, which are set to expire this year. Republicans say they're open to negotiation, but not under threat of shutdown. One thing is very clear, though: the mood on the Hill hasn't been this acidic in a long time. "I've listened to their s**t. And I tell them to go f**k themselves," the usually-reserved former Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters of her Republican colleagues on Monday. John Fetterman and Catherine Cortez Masto joined Angus King, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, in voting for the Republican bill on Tuesday. The rest of the Democratic caucus seems to finally be reflecting the anger in which their base has been stewing for months. Read more here. |

| - The Man Show: Pete Hegseth's gathering of America's top brass ended up being exactly what it appeared to be beforehand: a chance for the former Fox host to call generals fat and wax poetic about a 'warrior ethos' he hoped the armed forces would rediscover. Holly Baxter breaks it down.
- Fitting the stereotype: A young conservative influencer hoping to follow Charlie Kirk's model of rallying young men may have exposed himself as a less-than-organic replacement for the late Turning Point USA founder, reports Mike Bedigan.
