| Keir Starmer to make digital ID compulsory | The prime minister will tomorrow announce that digital ID will be compulsory for all adults. He is expected to launch the plan in a speech to the Global Progress Action Summit in London, attended by left-of-centre leaders including Mark Carney of Canada and Pedro Sanchez of Spain. The plan is called a "Brit card" although it is not clear that a physical card will be required, as opposed to a digital record on a national database. The main aim is to tackle illegal immigration, although Tony Blair and his institute insist it has benefits for users of most public services. My view is that digital ID would be ineffective in stopping the small boats. Employers and landlords are already under an obligation to check the ID and immigration status of workers and tenants. I hope Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary, has some more effective policies in reserve. | |
