Sunday Read: After 118 years, Lynden Dutch Bakery owners are ninth family to nurture shop's legacy
From the editor's desk:
We're cranking up the heat this week on local elections. Journalists at Cascadia Daily News have spent much of the summer preparing stories to help NW Washington voters make smart choices in the Nov. 4 general election.
Starting Monday, we'll be rolling out the first of a series of enterprise pieces exploring the likely electoral impacts on subjects such as housing, the economy, climate resiliency and other facets of life here in the upper left corner.
These stories are our attempt to go beyond simple horse-race coverage. Most grew largely from the suggestions of readers through CDN's award-winning Citizens Agenda project. Look for this coverage, as well as detailed individual-race reporting for positions in Whatcom and Skagit counties, in the coming weeks, online at cascadiadaily.com and in our Friday print editions.
Much of that reporting will also be available in our comprehensive CDN Voter Guide, which will be available online and in print papers on Oct. 17 — the same week ballots are due to be mailed. That guide will also contain candidate responses to Citizens Agenda questions for select races, along with endorsements made via a separate process by CDN's Editorial Board.
This year, we'll cap it all off with a pair of CDN Election Town Halls: Oct. 4 for Whatcom County Council seats and Oct. 11 for contested Bellingham City Council elections. Both are Saturday evening programs at Sehome High School Theater. Tickets are free but required and more information can be found here.

After 118 years, Lynden Dutch Bakery owners are ninth family to nurture shop's legacy
After 118 years, Kirsten and Jordan Radke are the ninth in a long line of families to own Lynden Dutch Bakery. Generations of Whatcom County residents remember the business fondly — and the Radkes take that legacy seriously.
Suspects vanish in 3 WA murder cases, perplexing police and loved ones
Over a 14-month span, three Washington men were suspected or accused of murdering close family members. Then, they disappeared. All of those cases have now likely been solved.
Kimmel's benching won't be the end of Trump's anti-American assault on free speech
The current president says it daily: Without immigration crackdowns, "You don't have a country anymore." Arguable, but less so is Donald Trump's ongoing, clearly un-American assault on free-speech, writes Cascadia Daily News executive editor Ron Judd, noting that America would not have been a country in the first place without an active free press, and without one won't be the same nation generations of Americans have fought to protect and defend.
Squalicum football standout is ready to make an impact at Eastern Washington
When Marcus Nixon graduated from Squalicum last year, he had his eyes set on making an impact at Eastern Washington University's football program. In his first few collegiate games, Nixon has carved out some time to support the Eagles while trying to become the next star to be drafted from Eastern Washington.
