There was a time when I (global travel editor Annabel Grossman) would have insisted that nothing could compare to the rugged beauty of the US Pacific coast. But after living on America's East Coast for several years, I fell for the charm of the beaches of the Atlantic, from the jagged shores of Maine's Otter Cliff to the sea-sprayed sands of Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Then there is the enchanting wilderness of Nova Scotia's Cape Breton, where humpback and pilot whales play in the Bay of Fundy, while moose wander through the highlands beyond. |

| But you don't need to be in the States to enjoy the magic of the Atlantic. Indeed, on our home shores you can experience the lap of these (rather chilly) waves. Travel writer Amelia Neath tells me her favourite visit to the Atlantic coast was Lundy, a small island lying off the coast of North Devon at the point where the Atlantic meets the Bristol Channel. She says: "Full solitude is felt on this blustery, unspoilt island, that is, until you come across the extremely adorable seals playfully performing pirouettes for you in the water as you walk by. At only half a mile wide, walking "coast to coast" on Lundy was so easy that we managed to squeeze in a pint at the only pub on the island before heading back on the ferry". Deputy travel editor Sophie Dickinson's preferred Atlantic shores are a little further afield: "Agadir is a peaceful alternative to bustling Marrakech, but its coastline still packs a punch. The beaches are a haven for surfers: think jaw-dropping waves and laidback beach cafes, perfect for watching the sunset." Over the years our writers have explored these shores, from Malta to Rhode Island, Greenland to Bulgaria. Below are a few of our favourite stories. | |
