The opinion that screens have been disastrous to student learning isn't a unique one. It's shared by some educators across public and private schools, many of whom have taken steps to limit student access to smartphones in class, and screen time for the youngest learners.
However, Donald Antenen took that concern and created an academic program that, in many ways, is a response to current challenges in education.
In his Fairhaven Program, targeted towards homeschool students and run out of an office space in Fairhaven, smartphones are left at the door and computers are nowhere to be found, as students dive deep into classics like the "Iliad" and learn Ancient Greek. They write essays and exams by hand.
The program isn't a school, and as a result doesn't have to follow state standards or pressures, giving it much more flexibility than a public school to innovate. And it's not meant for all students; Antenen can currently admit a maximum of 24 students.
But it offers a fascinating glimpse into an alternative to the current school system. You can read more about this program here.
