However, it's in county councils and city halls that the lifeblood of our democracy runs most naturally. Because of this, we have asked more of our local governments. They have been asked to address climate change, affordable housing, behavioral health issues and the fentanyl crisis. All of this on top of the core services they must address, such as public safety, permitting and potholes.
It all costs money. And, the truth is, there isn't enough money to go around.

It's sobering, but it's not a surprise. My colleague, Julia Tellman, has been reporting on budget concerns from the county and City of Bellingham for more than a year now.
