First Time Buyer Guide
Jean-Philippe Charbonnier (1921–2004) was a French humanist photographer celebrated for his candid portrayals of postwar life. The son of a painter and a writer, he began photographing in 1939 and joined Réalités magazine in 1950, producing striking photo essays across the world—from Africa to Asia—while capturing the social realities of France with empathy and precision. His work combined human warmth with critical insight, reflecting both everyday beauty and harsh truths. Later, he focused on Parisian street scenes and commercial projects. Awarded the Grand Prix de la Photographie de la Ville de Paris in 1996, Charbonnier remains a key figure in French documentary and humanist photography. This email contains his vintage photographs of Panama from August 1968—only one print of each has been found.
