Having spent several years living in New York, I (global travel editor Annabel Grossman) would be lying to say I wasn't smitten by the Big Apple. I've also spent many dreamy days wandering LA's Venice Beach and exploring Wynwood in Miami. But when it comes to America – like most destinations – I've discovered there's so much to be gained by looking beyond the obvious big hitters. Particularly at a time when the USA is in political turmoil, I've found that venturing into the midwestern and southern states has given me a much more nuanced view of a country I once thought I knew so well. |

| In cities like Louisville, I've found a surprisingly liberal and progressive downtown, while the feisty rebelliousness of Virginia's Charlottesville was a breath of fresh air. In Montgomery, Alabama, women gave up their time to share their stories from the 1960s and 70s, and in Selma I was welcomed warmly – despite being the only tourist in a town that is, quite frankly, not set up for tourists. Over the past year or so, our travel writers have been equally fascinated by the less touristy US cities, whether that's tasting pickles in Pittsburgh, being soothed by jazz in Kansas City or celebrating Mardi Gras in Lake Charles. The Independent Travel team has rounded up some of our favourite stories to share. | |
