State championships are nothing new to the Lynden football and basketball programs. But the Lynden volleyball team captured its first state title in school history last week, finishing with a perfect 23-0 record this year as state championships began.
Meridian made a cinderella run from barely making the state tournament to earning the seventh seed and placing second in the 1A classification.
The Lynden Lions volleyball team was not the only team to make history this fall. The Meridian girls cross country team, led by senior Logan Ignacio, won its first state title. The Sehome dynasty grew to five straight championships and the team decided the state title was not enough. The girls cross country athletes became the first team from Washington to win at the Nike Northwest Region Championships since 2014and they are aiming for a national title.
Lynden and Meridian's first titles were monumental, but the Anacortes girls soccer team might be the most interesting sports team so far this year. The Seahawks snapped a 40-year state appearance drought this season. Not only did the Seahawks win their first state game in school history, Anacortes is aiming for a state title this weekend.
In addition, six football teams from Whatcom and Skagit will also play this weekend for a spot in the state semifinals. Make sure to follow the live coverage and more on Friday and Saturday at cascadiadaily.com.
