| Shabana Mahmood makes the 'Boriswave' wait | The home secretary has unveiled part two of her new immigration policy. After Monday's restrictions of support for asylum seekers, today she announced a tripling in the qualifying period for people who arrived during the "Boriswave" to acquire the right to settle permanently – from five years to 15. Shabana Mahmood defined the "so-called Boriswave" as "the cohort of lower-qualified workers who entered the country along with their dependants through the health and care visa". They accounted for most of the quadrupling of net immigration under Boris Johnson's post-Brexit rules. As the wave started in 2021, the first of its number would have started to qualify for indefinite leave to remain next year. Now the five years will be doubled to 10 as the default, and tripled for this group. Those who break the rules, such as those who enter the country illegally or who overstay their visas, will have to wait even longer – 30 years. | |

| "At The Independent, we've always believed journalism should do more than describe the world – it should try to improve it. This Christmas, we're asking for your help again as we launch our new campaign with the charity Missing People – the SafeCall appeal. Every year, more than 70,000 children in the UK are reported missing. The misery that follows – for the child, for the family, for the community – is often hidden. Too many of these young people have nowhere to turn when they need help most. SafeCall will change that. Our goal is to raise £165,000 to help Missing People launch this new, free service – designed with the input of young people themselves – offering round-the-clock support, advice and a route to safety." | |
