President Donald Trump left Washington on Tuesday for the Thanksgiving holiday without releasing the framework for a plan to avert impending health care premium hikes set to affect millions of Americans.
On Monday, plans to roll that framework out at the White House were abruptly put off. The reason was immediately apparent: Republicans are not on board.
Now, according to some news outlets, whether the plan will be released at all has been thrown into question.
Trump, meanwhile, confirmed to reporters Tuesday evening on Air Force One that he was indeed back-tracking on his opposition to extending federal subsidies for Obamacare exchange plans passed under the Inflation Reduction Act.
"I don't want to extend them for two years. I'd rather not extend them at all," Trump said in a gaggle, CNN's Kaitlan Collins first reported. But "some extension may be necessary to get something else done," he added.
He stands virtually alone among his MAGA coalition, with only the GOP's centrist, frontline members signaling that they'd be on board.
Some of those Republicans on the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus have released their own plan to extend the subsidies by two years. The plan strongly resembles the provisions reported to be in the White House framework.
But unless something changes, Trump will have to cut a deal with Democrats to pass it, setting him and Speaker Mike Johnson up for future problems.
