| | | | | | | What NOT to Say to Your Single Friends This Holiday Season |
|
| Hey, I've been on both sides of this conversation. You're either in a relationship (happily or unhappily) and chatting with your single friend about dating, or you are the friend navigating the dating scene in 2025.
Either way, we all know dating is a fun, complicated dance and it's easy to not be jealous of us single friends because of the horrors of dating apps, the prevalence of ghosting, and the perils of the male loneliness epidemic.
Most of what people say to us during the holidays isn't helpful. It's uncomfortable, tone-deaf, and usually just a reflection of their own anxieties about relationships and aging. So let's talk about what not to say, and what you can do instead that might actually be supportive.
What to avoid saying
"I could never date right now." Thanks, Becky. This unintentionally makes it sound like our situation is something to pity rather than support, and you're kind of making the convo about you.
"OMG I'm so happy I found [partner]." While this comes from gratitude, it can feel like you're highlighting what we don't have during an already sensitive time. We get it, your partner is great. Which is exactly why we aren't trying to date idiots, cause you've set a standard for us 😝.
"You should try dating apps" or "You should get off the dating apps." Either way, we can't win. If we aren't finding a quality partner, you (the person not in the gladiator ring) are giving us advice on things we've already tried. These suggestions, while meant to help, can feel like you're oversimplifying our experience.
"You just need to XYZ." If there was one simple fix, we'd have found it by now. These comments can make it seem like you think we're not trying hard enough.
"I can't believe you're still single." This is usually meant as a compliment, but it can feel like a reminder that we're not where society says we should be. Especially if like 10 people have told us this in the past month, it can be pretty frustrating.
"Are you worried you're getting too old?" or "You're not getting any younger." These comments bring up anxieties that might not have been present before you mentioned them. They're also largely based in a patriarchal lens and unrealistic scientific perspective. Yes, women have a window for giving birth, but women are having children later in life and with and without partners.
"You're too picky. Give them a chance." This suggests we should lower our standards, which isn't fair when you'd never suggest the same for yourself. Now, sometimes you have that one single friend with outrageously unrealistic expectations but there's better ways to say this: "Have you ever considered experimenting with people outside of your normal type?"
"You're not going to get everything you want." Perhaps. But you don't know what the future holds and if your friend is awesome why shouldn't she get everything she wants? I always say, I didn't come this far to just come this far. So for me, heck yes I am going to get everything I want in a partner! Otherwise, I could have settled for the previous idiots (lol). We shouldn't settle for someone who mediocrely fits the role just to avoid being single.
Here's how you can actually be helpful
Alright babes, let's put your time and effort where your mouth is! No—but, in all seriousness, we need your help. The dating apps do suck and we need you to help facilitate connections and give support:
Introduce us to other single people. If you know two single people who might genuinely connect, make an introduction!
Be our wingperson. If you see someone who seems great, be bold: "Hey, I have a single friend. You seem like someone they might like. Any chance you're single and open to an introduction?"
Offer encouragement. Tell us it's okay not to settle. That you admire us. That you see us living a full life. These are the things we actually need to hear.
Be honest about what you don't know. "I have no idea what it's like to be on the dating scene right now" is refreshingly honest and opens the door for us to share if we want to.
Celebrate our other milestones. Our promotions, launches, achievements, and travels deserve just as much celebration as weddings and baby showers. Our lives are happening right now.
Ask about non-dating things. What are we excited about? What are we working on? What's bringing us joy? Let us be full people, not just "your single friends."
The best thing you can do for us this holiday season is let us exist without feeling like our relationship status is a problem that needs solving. And truly, introduce us to someone good! |

| | | | | | | | Private got his name when his owner's son was in the Marine Corps, where Private is a rank. He loves attention and will paw for it (watch out for the sharp claws). He often seems convinced he's a dog and happily begs alongside the canine members of the household for food. Private has a laid-back soul and a favorite chair where he spends his days basking in the sun.
