inside was full of water, and flooding in the basement of Lopez's family home had cut off power and water in the house.
By the time we visited Wednesday, the water had receded — but recovery was only beginning. The couple had been working around 14 hours a day cleaning up since the flood, with help from volunteers. Joaquin and Lis, his wife, walked us through the barn, fields and house, all of which had immense amounts of flood damage. They don't yet have an estimate for how much all this damage will cost them.
In my story this week, I put together an initial picture of how farms were impacted by the recent devastating floods. Some farms fared better this year than in the 2021 floods. But those that were unlucky had a long road ahead. Mariposa was still recovering from 2021 when floodwaters hit this month.
