It was a busy week in the politics of European defence. But every major news point has confirmed how much danger Europe is in, and how little some of its key allies are willing to do about it, writes Keir Giles.
The expert in conflict studies, looks at the findings of the UK's inquiry into the death of Dawn Sturgess, and argues that it demonstrates not only Russia's ruthlessness, but also the severe impact that even a limited Russian attack can have on an unprepared Britain. Add that to the latest iteration of the so-called "peace process" over Ukraine and Europe appears to be paralysed by denial and magical thinking over the nature of the threat posed by Putin and what is needed to withstand it. We like to pretend we're laid-back hosts who "just threw something together", when in reality the dishwasher's already on its third cycle and we've spent an hour fishing cocktail sticks out of the dog's mouth. But if there's one thing guaranteed to make you look effortlessly competent – it's a fabulous tray of canapes. Hannah Twiggs rounds up the best festive bite recipes from Mary Berry, Rick Stein and more which are guaranteed to keep guests happily distracted from any festive chaos.
And for some real Christmas cheer, do check out Rosamund Hall's definitive guide to the best wines on offer. From quality £6 bottles to proper treat-yourself pours, they are joyful, great value and chosen purely for pleasure.
Cheers to that!
