"Seismic" is one word to describe the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor – on his 66th birthday, no less, when police cars drew up at his Norfolk bolthole. There is simply "no precedent", said Royal historian Hugo Vickers, as the late Queen's favourite son was taken into police custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
I suspect that his arrest will have "an unreal quality to it" for some time to come, said Sean O'Grady. The former prince denies any wrongdoing, and no doubt always will do, "for otherwise it would cause him to peer too deeply into his soul".
There were, of course, other stories in town. On Tuesday, Farage attempted one of his media-glare big "reveals", unveiling which of his seven lieutenants would occupy the four great offices of states if Reform wins the next election. In a week when the party's poll rating shrank, billing his ragbag of Tory turncoats as an opposition front bench – Robert Jenrick to the Treasury, Suella Braverman to education and, inexplicably, equalities… – felt less like a government-in-waiting, more like a warning from history.
John Rentoul said that by drawing attention to his official spokespeople – sorry, "shadow cabinet" – Farage had, in fact, just lost himself the next election: "The more that Zia Yusuf, the 'shadow home secretary', and Jenrick referred to the wonderful things that would befall this nation under 'Prime Minister Nigel Farage', the more it felt like a one-man band whose complicated array of instruments is going to fall apart before polling day."
Speaking of Conservative cast-offs, Liz Truss – remember her? – having been laughed out of Britain, busied herself in America. And, for Sophie Heawood, if at first you don't succeed as PM of Great Britain, why not try, and try again, to become First Lady of the Maga groupies instead? A souvenir photograph taken in Palm Beach with the Trussmeister's arm inching around a spooked-looking Donald Trump did rather beg the question as to where she'd slipped her hand…
Until next week…
