| First female cabinet secretary appointed | Antonia Romeo, the top civil servant in the home office, has been confirmed as the first female cabinet secretary and head of the home civil service. The appointment follows the early departure of Chris Wormald, selected by Keir Starmer in preference to Romeo and two other candidates 14 months ago. The choice of Romeo is a risk in the teeth of a whispering campaign against her. Nothing new has emerged in the past few days, and the Cabinet Office insists that allegations of bullying were thoroughly investigated at the time and she was found to have "no case to answer", but the prime minister's record of appointments means that if anything does emerge to undermine her suitability, it would be damaging to him. In the meantime, let us praise another glass ceiling broken. Just the governor of the Bank of England, the chief of the defence staff and the leader of the Labour Party to go. | |
