| Starmer under pressure – and short on answers | Less than an hour before Sir Keir Starmer faced furious female Labour MPs over the scandals engulfing his government, Kemi Badenoch turned the screws. At Prime Minister's Questions in the Commons, the Tory leader accused the Prime Minister of "stuffing government with hypocrites and paedophile apologists". She also claimed he was pretending to care about violence against women only to "save his own skin". The PM later left the chamber to travel the short distance to a committee room in the Palace of Westminster, where he faced calls to appoint a woman as his 'de facto' deputy prime minister to challenge what critics describe as the 'boys' club' culture in No 10. Attempts to draw a line under the scandals appear to have faltered. The Prime Minister is facing growing pressure to explain what he knew – and when – about his decision to elevate to the Lords a former aide, Lord Doyle, who has ties to a paedophile. Meanwhile, compounding what has already been a bruising few days, postal voting applications for the Gorton and Denton by-election at the end of the month closed at 5pm. | |
