A Senate race in Texas is once again exciting the left.
Democrats are ignoring the cautionary tales of prominent past campaigns for Senate in the state and other red bastions like South Carolina as they increasingly focus attention on the race for the seat currently held by Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican.
Cornyn is in one of the tightest electoral spots of any Republican (or Democrat) this cycle. Polls increasingly show the incumbent senator trailing one of his GOP opponents in the primary, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. He has yet to secure Donald Trump's endorsement.
With the March 3 primary now less than a month away, the senator is publicly hoping for Trump's support — or, at the very least, a decision by the president to refrain from endorsing his opponent, as Trump did against another sitting GOP senator in Louisiana.
"Every time I talk to him on the phone, he says, 'How's the race going?' and then he cites polls back to me so I know he's following it closely," Cornyn told the Washington Post this month.
Democrats are split between two candidates in their own primary, state Sen. James Talarico and Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett. That race is also growing increasingly toxic in the final weeks.
But there are signs that even if Cornyn manages to hold on to his seat next month, Democrats could see an opening for a surprise pickup in November.
