'We are not being governed' |
Downing Street has no chief of staff, director of communications or cabinet secretary after Chris Wormald confirmed that he is standing down as head of the civil service. Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, said: "We are not being governed." Wormald is being replaced temporarily as cabinet secretary by three permanent secretaries: Cat Little (Cabinet Office), Antonia Romeo (Home Office) and James Bowler (Treasury). Romeo is believed to be Keir Starmer's preferred candidate to replace Wormald, although she was on the short list last time, 14 months ago, and he didn't appoint her then. The prime minister's record of personnel choices, after the departure of Morgan McSweeney and Tim Allan over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington, is in disarray. |
