Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) was a Latvian-born American portrait photographer, widely regarded as one of the most influential and innovative photographers of the 20th century. He is best known for his compelling celebrity portraits, experimental techniques, and a long collaboration with the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. He was renowned for images that combined technical precision, psychological insight, and playful experimentation. Over a career that spanned Europe and the United States, Halsman transformed the language of portrait photography, producing some of the most iconic images of artists, scientists, politicians, and entertainers of the modern era.
