| A lovely cheese pizza, just for me | |
| Hello and welcome back to Lessons in Lifestyle… As mentioned last time, I've relocated to our offices in the Big Apple – and as promised, I write this full of lox cream cheese bagels and pizza (steadily averaging about one slice every two days right now). In pursuit of exploring the city, I've been to two bars, one club, one restaurant and one JFK Jr. lookalike competition. All very normal, then. I've been waddling around this city looking like Kevin McCallister in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (sans red mittens), absolutely bewildered at the scale of this place. Some quick observations about my experience here so far: everything is, as people always say, huge (the vibes, food, buildings); being called "mama" by random strangers is actually great; the subway handlebars are disconcertingly slippery. Oh, and Trader Joe's lives up to the hype. And yes, I have become a cliche. To find calm among the insanity of relocating across the Atlantic, I learnt a lot reading Helen Coffey's piece this week about how to slow down an overstimulated brain. Everything from doom scrolling on our phones to refined sugar and constant notifications is designed to manipulate our biological instincts, writes Coffey, and it's making us ill. She speaks to bestselling author and scientist Nicklas Brendborg about manageable tips to combat overstimulation, like getting an analogue alarm clock and making your diet "boring" to combat cravings. | Elsewhere this week, Lydia Spencer-Elliott looks at how the group of luxury private clubs, Soho House, lost its edge. Overcrowding, long waits for tables, high fees and uninterested staff have all been common gripes among members – to the point where the group was forced to temporarily halt new sign-ups in New York and London entirely in 2024. It's made the members' experience a far cry from the exclusive reputation it had in the Nineties. Find the full piece here. Until next time! |
