Hello,

OpenAI's latest funding and infrastructure agreements are reshaping its relationships with both Amazon and Microsoft.

Amazon has expanded its AWS commitment to as much as $138 billion over eight years, alongside a potential $50 billion investment tied to either an IPO or future milestones. Microsoft remains central as a cloud provider for OpenAI—but is no longer alone.

The Information's reporting explains how the deals are structured, where leverage still sits, and what it signals for the future of AI infrastructure. Access the exclusive reporting decision-makers rely on— subscribe for $399 $299 and save 25% on the first year.

The Cloud Realignment

OpenAI is expanding its AWS agreement from $38 billion to $138 billion over eight years, committing to Amazon's Trainium chips and significant data center capacity. Amazon also gains exclusive rights to distribute OpenAI's Frontier AI agent management tool, outside of OpenAI itself.

Microsoft retains exclusive hosting rights for certain workloads, leaving OpenAI's infrastructure split between the two cloud giants.

In an interview with our CEO, Jessica E. Lessin, at Davos, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company planned to "deepen the relationship" with OpenAI and pointed to Trainium as a key advantage. Weeks later, the expanded deal followed.

The $50 Billion Structure

Amazon will invest $15 billion upfront, with up to $35 billion more tied to OpenAI going public or reaching artificial general intelligence. Microsoft's exclusivity rights are connected to that same milestone—making OpenAI's long-term trajectory financially significant for both companies.

Shared Infrastructure

Amazon deepens its ties to OpenAI, Microsoft has signed on as a cloud partner to Anthropic—Amazon's primary AI investment. Anthropic is projected to pay nearly $6.4 billion in cloud fees in 2027. Amazon and Microsoft are now both backing, and making money, from the two leading AI developers.

Why It Matters

Amazon is no longer just a cloud provider to OpenAI. It is now financially and operationally embedded in its future. The structure of these deals gives Amazon greater influence over how—and where—AI infrastructure scales next.
