Hello, how are you? It's Annabel here, with your weekly dose of culture news. Top of the agenda: did anyone else watch the debut of Saturday Night Live UK last week? After white-knuckling my way through the cringe of its opening moments, I found there was actually a lot to enjoy – such as that spot-on Princess Di impression, and a skit about an MI5-style team dedicated to making the internet awful.
Elsewhere I saw John Proctor is the Villain, newly transplated at the Royal Court after an astounding Broadway run starring Sadie Sink. I wholeheartedly agree with our theatre critic Alice Saville who called the play a "fantastically cathartic #MeToo-era riff on Arthur Miller's The Crucible".
Arriving on Sky this Saturday is Hostages, starring Charlotte Ritchie – if you are into dry comedies, this certainly looks promising. I'm much less enthused about watching Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards after reading Adam White's two-star review of the series. Martin Clunes (who was the best thing about Wuthering Heights, if I'm honest) is indeed far too good for this rubbish.
And lastly, has anyone signed up for HBO Max? The streaming service launched in the UK this week. I am loath to add yet another subscription to my monthly tab… though Jacob Stolworthy makes a persuasive argument for it, if only just to binge-watch The Pitt – the buzzy Emmy-winning medical drama that is unavailable to watch anywhere else… I'll let you know if I cave.
Catch you later,
