Labour at war over asylum | Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary, pressed on against growing resistance from many in the Labour Party to her changes to the law on asylum. Her argument, analysed by David Maddox, our political editor, is that firm but fair rules on asylum and immigration are Labour's last chance to stem the tide of anti-immigrant extremism. She is supported by David Blunkett, a predecessor at the home office, who writes for The Independent that her "clear-thinking and decisive" approach is needed to keep Nigel Farage out of No 10. But her plans have provoked a storm of protest from Labour MPs, some of whose WhatsApp messages have been leaked. One of her proposals, though, is opposed by Reform and the Conservatives: to pay up to £40,000 to families of failed asylum-seekers who agree to leave the country voluntarily. With a family of three in an asylum hotel costing up to £158,000 a year, this is, as she says, "a significant saving to the taxpayer". Any fiscally responsible party should support it. | |
