Labour retreats from compulsory ID scheme | Darren Jones, the chief secretary to the prime minister, announced a revised plan for a government ID scheme in the Commons. He has dropped any element of compulsion, including for right-to-work checks, and will try to win public support by extensive consultation, including a "people's panel" modelled on citizens' assemblies on net zero convened by select committees in the last parliament. The Tony Blair institute, which advocates ID schemes for modernising public services, commented helpfully: "Digital ID cannot become another failed government IT project, drowning in process, overspending and underdelivering." | |
