| Louis Theroux enters the manosphere – and reactions are already pouring in |
|
| Once a fringe online subculture, the 'manosphere' – a controversial network focused on masculinity, dating, and gender politics – has entered mainstream culture. And naturally, Louis Theroux has delved right into it. His hotly anticipated Netflix documentary, fittingly titled Inside the Manosphere, has already been flooded with reviews and reactions, despite being on the platform for less than a day. The 90-minute show explores the lives of Harrison Sullivan (better known as HSTikkyTokky), Ed Matthews, Myron Gaines and Sneako, and how they use social media to propel their ideology. Theroux previously revealed that he reached out to one of the manosphere's most prominent figures, Andrew Tate, who used the moment to roast the veteran journalist. Though, it was Theroux who had the last laugh. Still, there are signs of hope. Several former manosphere followers have spoken about what ultimately pushed them to leave the community behind. | Welcome to the Indy100 newsletter | |

| Timothee Chalamet has landed himself in hot water over comments he made about ballet and opera. The viral clip was from a conversation with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas in February, where the two actors discussed the efforts being made to preserve cinema. "I don't want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore,'" Chalamet said in the video posted by Variety from the CNN & Variety Town Hall event. "All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there", the four-time Oscar nominee added. "I just lost 14 cents in viewership," Chalamet quipped. "I just took shots for no reason." His remarks have since been widely criticised, with some pointing out that his own mother, Nicole Flender, danced with the New York City Ballet as a child and attended Yale on a ballet scholarship. | Dubai pet rescue centres have experienced a surge in dogs being abandoned as expats flee the UAE, amid regional tensions and Iranian missile strikes on Gulf targets. In recent days, dog welfare organisations have raised alarms across their platforms, citing a "worrying number" of calls from people preparing to leave the country. Expats are also reportedly turning to social media in search of permanent homes for their pets. K9 Friends Dubai, an organisation dedicated to rehoming dogs in the city, is doing everything possible to care for pets being abandoned amid the current situation. They detailed how the rescue centre has been "overwhelmed with the number of calls for abandoned puppies". Owner of the dog boarding facility 'The Barking Lot', Aditi Gouri, echoed the sentiment being shared online. "Volunteers at animal rescue centres have reported hundreds more abandoned pets than usual, which is leaving shelters at breaking point with some now unable to care for all the animals," she told the Telegraph. Another UAE rescue organisation in Fujairah called the behaviour "unacceptable," citing reports of people attempting to cross into Oman and of pets being turned away or abandoned because proper procedures were not followed. "We understand people are scared. But your pets are family & will not survive without you," they wrote. | |

| A group of dads has captured the internet's hearts after attending a special event to learn how to properly style their daughters' hair. Dubbed Pints & Ponytails, the event took place at a London pub earlier this month, bringing dads together to learn how to braid their daughters' hair with the help of experts from BraidMaidens. Hosted by The Secret Lives of Dads, the two-and-a-half-hour workshop was packed with hands-on learning. Each of the dads was given a doll's head and the tools needed to practise their new skills, along with a few beverages – if the name hadn't already given that away. Footage from the event was later shared online, showing 35 dads coming together for the wholesome session. The video quickly gained traction, racking up tens of thousands of comments and all but guaranteeing that the next event will be just as popular. One viewer dubbed it a "room full of green flags," as another emotional response read: "I'm crying this is such a beautiful thing to see." Find out more here |
