The lines are getting longer.
As the DHS shutdown drags on, a spike in TSA staffing shortages has caused a wave of delays at America's airports. Travelers in Atlanta, Baltimore and Houston are reporting lines as long as three to four hours at airport security.
Those staffing shortages are quickly putting a major strain on the agency. In some cities, as many as four in ten TSA agents are calling out of work on a day-by-day basis, per DHS's own statistics.
The consequences of Democrats' demand for ICE reforms in exchange for votes to fund its parent agency are suddenly very real, and has Washington panicking.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle indicated Tuesday that significant progress was being made towards a deal.
As always, one big obstacle remains: Donald Trump.
The president spent Sunday and Monday publicly urging his own party against cutting a deal with Democrats to re-open the agency. For the president, the fight is secondary to his greater goal of forcing senators to pass voter ID legislation known as the SAVE America Act in time for the 2026 midterms.
On Tuesday, he reiterated that he was opposed to the concept — while softening his position, and suggested to reporters that he would likely support whatever Senate Republicans were able to pass.
